Correct me if im wrong but in that scenario wouldnt the man in the middle have to be physically sitting on his network? If so a rubber mallot or a baseball bat could resolve that threat ;).

If the domain has higher importance, then put both machines or VMs behind a firewall and tunnel the protocols to reach them (http, https, smtp, pop3, etc).
